World Matchplay Sunday afternoon session Round-Up | Gary Anderson shines with 109 average, Michael van Gerwen averts Gilding test and Jonny Clayton brushes past Heta

Scheduling decided it was best placed to put two of the best of the past era on in the afternoon, but the fans got a real treat as Gary Anderson in particular strutted his proverbial stuff at the World Matchplay with a 109 average.

While Michael van Gerwen also managed to prove a point downing Andrew Gilding. Victories also for Jonny Clayton who no doubt will be a favourite for the title as well as Dirk van Duijvenbode in an overtime thriller.

The best of the bunch was in fact Gary Anderson with 'The Flying Scotsman' easing past Ryan Joyce 10-2 with a 109 average in vintage Gary Anderson style.

He opened up holding throw with a 71 checkout and then followed it up with a break of throw on double 14 with Joyce down to 164 prior, but he could only leave 100 in reality. He then held on double eight with Joyce on a finish but only one he could hit if Anderson didn't return.

Anderson broke again hitting double 12 for 5-1 before a 180 and double 20 hold after the break for 6-1. The steamrollering continued with a fantastic 8-2 lead courtesy of a 144 checkout, this combination finishing continued with a 141 checkout for 9-2 before he shut the door full albeit after Joyce had chances to hold. He pinned double 12 for a 10-2 win.

Before that was in fact Michael van Gerwen who wasn't a simple winner by any means especially in the early stages. Andrew Gilding is often a tie he has struggled with as of late so he will no doubt be relieved to get over that hurdle.

Gilding led early on. He hit a 91 checkout, Van Gerwen held with a 49 checkout for 1-1. But it was Gilding who broke for 3-1 with a 102 checkout after MVG missed 76 and he then pinned 80 for 4-1 to hold after he had broken. But in a protracted leg in which Gilding spurned chance after chance to hold, Van Gerwen hit double four for 4-3 down and then held with a 71 checkout for 4-4.

Gilding led again but didn't get many more legs from here. He broke back with an 85 checkout for 85. But Van Gerwen won four on the spin to seal the tie. He broke back on double sixteen then after missed darts to break back from Gilding, he hit 35 to go 8-6 down.

He broke again on double eight before hitting a 180 and double 16 for the win. Job very much done for The Green Machine.

It was a Double Dutch triumph as Dirk van Duijvenbode prevailed in an absolute epic with Chris Dobey that saw 'Hollywood' miss nine match darts en route to being dumped out by 'The Titan' who he had only faced in Leverkusen the week prior.

He won 13-11 in this case in a second instance of overtime already. A 60 checkout opened it up for Dobey in a juncture of the match with very little to separate them. Dobey hit 106 to lead 3-2 but he was the first to be broken. It was a 4-3 lead for Van Duijvenbode who hit double 20. Van Duijvenbode was immediately broken back at 4-4 with a 70 checkout. But he broke again after Dobey missed 60 and Dirk returned for 61 to make it 5-4. He opened up a two leg gap twice to go 7-5 up after that too.

He also did so at 9-7 when it looked like he was going to win. He hit double 16 for 9-7 after both broke the legs prior but Dobey made sure breaking for 9-9 that he would prolong it. He himself led 10-9 on 58 but then missed match darts and Van Duijvenbode came back again.

He had more match darts after going 11-10 up but missed them and Van Duijvenbode hit 48 and then 82 to finish the job.

Jonny Clayton is also through after The Ferret impressed as ever putting on a show by defeating Damon Heta 10-7 to end the session.

Both break to begin the tie, Heta to go 1-0 up pinning double 10. But Clayton hit back with a 60 checkout and then led from there breaking with a 152 checkout for 4-2. He then held with a 74 checkout for 5-2.

It was a 64 checkout for Clayton who broke again for 6-2. He was broken back though immediately with Clayton missing 64 and Heto hitting double 13 after initially missing 81.

But Clayton broke straight back hitting double 18 for 7-3. This with Heta ready on 86 after whittling down 145. He held with a usual 121 checkout that his become synonymous with The Ferret to make it 8-3.

Albeit Clayton missed 72 and after initially missing 123, Heta was back with 25 for an 8-5 deficit and a break that could pull him closer to The Ferret.

He held on double 20 but Clayton went one away with a 107 checkout at 9-6. Heta couldn't take break chances and Clayton snuffed it out anyway with a sublime 144 checkout.
