Gerwyn Price’s long-standing reputation as an untouchable force in Grand Slam of Darts semi finals is finally over. After three flawless performances at this stage, the Welshman suffered his first defeat in the last four as Luke Humphries edged him out 16-13 to reach the 2025 final.
Price arrived in Wolverhampton this year with an impeccable history in this round. In 2018 he beat Mensur Suljovic 16-12, repeated the scoreline against Michael van Gerwen in 2019, and swept past James Wade 16-9 in 2021 en route to lifting the title each time. For once, the script didn’t follow him.
Humphries, the former world number one and the 2023 Grand Slam champion, produced a clinical display to halt Price’s run. Despite Price’s scoring power keeping the match tight, Humphries’ consistency on the outer ring proved decisive as he handed the 40-year-old his first semi final defeat at the Grand Slam.
There is, however, genuine upside for Price. A return to the semi finals sees him climb four places in the PDC Order of Merit, rising to world number ten at a crucial point in the season.

Top Seed for the Players Championship Finals

Price’s week isn’t done. He heads to Minehead as the top seed for the Players Championship Finals, a tournament where he reached the final back in 2019. With four Players Championship titles already banked this year, the Welshman has a real chance to turn his strong floor form into major silverware. His last major triumph came in 2022 at the World Series of Darts Finals, and ending that drought is front of mind.
He opens his campaign against Germany’s Max Hopp, with a potential second round clash against either Rob Cross or Sebastian Bialecki waiting in the wings.
Meanwhile, Humphries’ run at the Grand Slam ended one step short as he lost the final to Luke Littler, and he begins his own Players Championship Finals tilt with a tricky first round clash against Gian van Veen.
