Man Lok Leung has triumphed in arguably the game of the tournament so far over the much-fancied Gian van Veen. Averaging over 96 and firing in 11 180s, Leung came back from 2-0 down to take a sensational win.
Making his much anticipated World Darts Championship debut, van Veen was the heavy favourite in this match. Leung though wasn't making it easy the Dutch prodigy. With the first set going all the way to a decider, it was van Veen who prevailed though to nudge into an early lead.
Set 2 and Leung continued to plie the pressure on van Veen. Moving two legs clear, the Hong Kong thrower pushed his 180 count to 4. After missing a chance to win the set 3-0 though, van Veen fought back to force another decider. More handful missed set darts from Leung and van Veen punished to make it 2-0.
2-0 wasn't really a fair representation of this match and with a 180 in each of the first two legs of set 3, Leung again moved two legs clear. Taking his maximum count to 7, Leung finally managed to pin a set winning dart and pull back to 2-1 in the process.
With Leung missing a dart at tops for the opening leg of set 4, van Veen pinned double 18 to punish with a break. Finishing a 17-darter on double 8 though, Leung broke straight back and with a hold in the following he moved a leg from a parity. After van Veen missed a dart for the fourth leg, Leung punished on double 16 to make it 2-2.
Breaking throw to open the deciding set, the momentum was all with Leung. Hitting two 180s in the next, taking his tally to 10, Leung moved two legs clear in the set and one away from a famous win. After Leung wired the bull for the match, van Veen was ice cold to hold throw and keep himself alive. Van Veen couldn't pressure the Leung throw though, as the magnificent Hong Kong thrower sealed a fabulous victory.
