Michael Smith has qualified for the semifinals at the
World Matchplay on Friday night with a resounding victory over
Rob Cross (16-7). 'Bullyboy' will thus be Michael van Gerwen's opponent in the last four on Saturday night.
There was hardly any tension in the game between the Englishmen. Smith took an early 3-0 lead by hitting 134 and 101 and then ran out to a 7-1 lead. Throwing out 60 and 78, Cross reduced the deficit to 8-3, but Smith did not get upset and picked up another three legs in a row to extend his lead to 11-3. Cross then threw a 16 finish to make sure the score was 11-4 after the third session.
The fourth session then went 3-2 to Smith leaving the 2023 world champion needing only two more legs for the win. Cross had one chance to reduce the deficit in the 22nd leg, but missed the double 20 from 115. Smith then held his own leg via double 5 to reach 15-7.
The darter from St Helens then had match darts in Cross' leg, but missed his first two chances to decide the match. Cross then failed to finish 71, giving Smith another opportunity to finish the match. The third matchdart did turn out to be a hit, putting Smith in the last four at the World Matchplay for the third time in his career.
