Michael van Gerwen leads most ProTour titles for a single season but how does Wessel Nijman rank after eight in one season already?

Wessel Nijman has been the imperious king of the ProTour this year and he has put himself onto the coattails of an exclusive group. That being of players who have won the Most ProTour titles in a single year.

Nijman has already won eight this year (six Players Championships and two European Tour titles) and overall he has 11 titles overall stretching back to 2024 and that also doesn't include 12 prior Development Tour titles.

But he has done something that only two other players have done and that is win eight or more in a singular season. Michael van Gerwen's 2015 was eclipsed when he won the Slovak Darts Open this past weekend and he has followed that into the realms of 2017 Van Gerwen which was towards the peak of his powers shortly after. He won eight titles that year.

Perhaps Phil Taylor, who is ahead of them, is the most impressive, though, as 'The Power' did it in the era where it was just Pro Tours, or you could say it was less impressive as these events are now on huge stages in the European Tours that Van Gerwen has cleaned up.

As well as now Nijman, who leads the European Tour Order of Merit and is now on two for the year. But Taylor is next up with nine in 2009, and he also had 11 the year before, which was also achieved by MVG in 2016.

The imperious best of all time, though, is Van Gerwen back in 2018, when MVG was at his pure pomp. He won 12 titles that year and Nijman has to win four more to level that. This is an era when the likes of Luke Littler, Luke Humphries, and others also don't attend many tournaments while back in Van Gerwen's best eras, many of the top names played everything.

So Nijman perhaps may find it easier to get towards that mark, but still ultra impressive for him to be in elite company with the players devised by some as the best of all time.
