Michael van Gerwen has become the World Darts Championship finalist coming through the bottom half of the draw. The Dutchman is in the final of the World Darts Championship for the sixth time in his career. In 2014, 2017 and 2019, 'Mighty Mike' won the world title, while in 2013 and 2020 he had to settle for defeat.
For now, there is no close shaves for Van Gerwen this tournament. The 33-year-old only conceded three sets in his five matches until the final.
Only Mensur Suljovic (4-2) and Dirk van Duijvenbode (4-1) managed to get on the scoreboard against Van Gerwen. Lewy Williams (3-0), Chris Dobey (5-0) and Dimitri van den Bergh (6-0) all finished without winning a set.
Van Gerwen's numbers in particular are frightening. His first-9 average of 117.9 means he averages a three-dart finish after only nine darts. In five matches, Van Gerwen also threw only 50 turns without a treble, a bizarrely low number. Add to that excellent finishes (45 per cent) and that makes 'Mighty Mike' unbeatable at this tournament for now.
