Michael van Gerwen won the
Hungarian Darts Trophy for the first time in his career on Sunday night. After a thriller, 'Mighty Mike' won 8-7 over
Gian van Veen in a Dutch final.
The Hungarian Darts Trophy was one of the few Euro Tour titles still missing from Van Gerwen's record. By winning this tournament, the three-time world champion has now won 37 Euro Tour titles. Until the final, Van Gerwen never got into trouble at the Hungarian Darts Trophy. He successively defeated Martin Lukeman (6-2), Gabriel Clemens (6-2), Josh Rock (6-4) and Ross Smith (7-3).
On the other hand, Van Veen reached the final of a Euro Tour tournament for the first time in his career. The 22-year-old dart player from Poederoijen recorded fine wins Keane Barry (6-4), Danny Noppert (6-3), Wessel Nijman (6-2) and Ryan Searle (7-5).
The final had a spectacular start as Van Gerwen hit 170 in the first leg. Van Veen levelled the score, but then 'Mighty Mike' took a 3-1 lead with an 81 finish and a 16-darter. However, Van Veen broke for a rebreak and equalized 3-3 with a 101 finish. The next four legs went with the darts before Van Veen took the lead for the first time in the match. 'GVV The Giant' threw a 14-darter to lead 6-5. Van Veen missed the bullseye to double the lead, after which Van Gerwen forced a rebreak via double 4.
However, Van Gerwen then missed two chances to retake the lead. Van Veen took advantage and threw out 72 to make it 7-6. In the fourteenth leg Van Veen had a matchdart, but narrowly missed the bullseye. Van Gerwen then forced a final leg via double 4.
The last leg was allowed to be started by Van Gerwen, but Van Veen started better with a 180 score. Van Veen left 78 after four visits, while Van Gerwen was first to throw from 110 for the match. 'Mighty Mike' did not let that chance slip away, and via treble 20, single 18 and double 16 Van Gerwen pulled the trigger.
With this title, the Dutchman takes the top prize of 30,000 pounds. Van Veen retains £12,000 from his participation in the Hungarian Darts Trophy.
