August is traditionally one of the quietest stretches on the international darts calendar. While many players gear up for the crucial autumn swing, there is briefly less action on the oche. Michael van Gerwen used the window to experience another sport up close.

The Dutch darts legend was at Circuit Zandvoort this weekend for the Dutch Grand Prix. Van Gerwen chose not to travel to Oceania for the World Series of Darts and opted instead to take in Formula 1 from the front row.
The 37-year-old shared several photos on Instagram from his visit to the Dutch circuit. Van Gerwen attended qualifying among other sessions and had the chance to see the Formula 1 machines at full tilt from close range. The three-time world champion clearly enjoyed the unique atmosphere surrounding the Dutch Grand Prix.
For Van Gerwen, the trip was a welcome change of pace after a busy spell in the darts world. The World Series has been in full swing in Oceania in recent weeks, with events in Australia and New Zealand. Van Gerwen skipped that leg, freeing up some extra time to unwind.

Spectacle on the circuit

The Dutchman has often shown his interest in Formula 1. Usually he is the one chasing the podium; this time he could relax on the sidelines and enjoy the speed and spectacle trackside.
Zandvoort is the stage for the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend. The event traditionally draws tens of thousands of Dutch motorsport fans to the North Holland dunes and delivers an annual sea of orange. For Van Gerwen, it was a perfect chance to step outside his usual environment.

The timing of his visit is no coincidence. After a packed first half of the season, a quieter spell typically follows before the PDC calendar ramps up again. The coming months feature a raft of key tournaments.
Van Gerwen will soon be back with darts in hand. The Dutchman is still hunting new titles and wants to hit top form again in the second half of the season.
For now, it wasn’t tungsten causing the noise for “Mighty Mike”, but roaring Formula 1 engines. With his Instagram photos, Van Gerwen gave followers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of his day at Zandvoort.
