Peter Wright is a darting icon. A two-time world champion and a World Matchplay champion among his biggest accolades in the sport. However, those trophies have left his grasp with them being sold off and set to be given away. On a first glance this looked like Wright throwing away some of his biggest accolades, but this is most certainly not the case.
The prized possessions were shown in a video with them set to be given away. This included his 2021 World Matchplay and his 2020 PDC World Darts Championship trophy, two of his most cherished accomplishments in the sport.
In the past, Wright has talked about
getting rid of his trophies and focusing on the future with him currently on a downward trajectory. The former world number one has not reached the level of a few years aga when he was one of the most consistent challengers of major trophies, winning eight major ranking titles and two World Cup of Darts with Scotland.
However, on the face of it, Wright had seemed to have enough of them and apparently sold them off to be given away on a competition site. A live video was broadcasted with the trophies the main talking point as they were shown. Along with the World Matchplay trophy was a signed frame with some pictures of 'Snakebite' enroute to the title.
Wright's wife confirms possessions not for sale
Jo Wright, the wife and manager of Peter Wright, confirmed in a tweet replying to the video posted on X that they were not supposed to be up for grabs, stating that they are set to be passed down tot heir children.
"No they aren't for sale. They wasn't approved to be sold. They belong to our children," she
wrote.
Wright's last major title came at the 2023 European Championship where he proved to still be a world class darts player amid the beginning of a downward turn in form. He will be very much hoping to get those trophies back onto his mantle piece and in the future to add more. To do that, he will need to improve his performances on stage. He will not be at the World Matchplay for the first time since 2012 as he continues to try and find that spark which saw him win all those major trophies.
