The Netherlands has long been one of the leading nations in darts. Over the years, a certain Michael van Gerwen has left an impressive mark on the European Tour, a key series of tournaments within professional darts. Wessel Nijman followed in Van Gerwen’s footsteps last weekend by winning the European Darts Trophy.

Van Gerwen in a league of his own

One of the most successful and influential names is without doubt Michael van Gerwen. “Mighty Mike” dominated the European Tour for years and claimed countless titles. His scoring power, combined with an unparalleled will to win, made him virtually unbeatable in his prime.
Van Gerwen was not only successful, but also set a new standard for what is possible within the sport. Now 36, the Vlijmen native has already captured 37 titles on the European Tour, a record no other darter has matched.
Raymond van Barneveld also deserves a place on this list. Although his greatest triumphs came mainly at televised tournaments, “Barney” also showcased his class on the European Tour. His experience and composure at crucial moments made him a dangerous opponent for any player. Despite several major titles, Van Barneveld managed to win just one European Tour event, taking the European Darts Open in 2012.

Vincent van der Voort, known for his blistering pace, also claimed a European Tour title and proved he belonged among the sport’s second tier. Van der Voort, who recently brought his career to a definitive close, won the Austrian Darts Open in 2014.
And last weekend, Wessel Nijman joined the list of Dutch players to win a European Tour event. The 25-year-old impressed greatly at the European Darts Trophy and defeated Gerwyn Price 8-3 in the final. Thanks to this victory, Nijman climbs to 20th on the world ranking.
The European Tour continues this coming weekend, with the Belgian Darts Open on the schedule in Wieze. Luke Littler defends his title there, after beating home favourite Mike De Decker 8-5 in last year’s final.
