In '
On this day in ...' Darts News looks back at an event or performance by a player on a particular date. This time a return to 15 May 2011.
This day went down as one of the best days of the career of
Vincent van der Voort. Not just because Ajax became champions that day, but also because he won his fourth PDC title.
Van der Voort won a
Players Championship tournament in Austria, where he also won a Euro Tour tournament three years after.
The Dutchman started the tournament with a difficult 6-4 victory over Martin Marti, followed by a resounding 6-1 triumph against Dave Chisnall.
He then beat Brian Woods (6-4), Paul Nicholson (6-2), Andy Smith (6-5) and Mark Hylton (6-4) for a place in the final. In the final he met none other than
Phil Taylor.
Van der Voort got off to a flying start in the final and took a 3-0 lead, before Taylor came back to parity at 3-3 thanks to a 151 finish. The Power missed a break opportunity in the seventh leg, after which Van der Voort held his own leg for 4-3.
The next three legs also went with the darts, so a deciding leg was needed to determine a winner. Taylor threw a 180 score in his first turn, but it was Van der Voort who was first to throw for the match. The Dutchman used his third matchdart via double 10 and ensured a nice triumph against the most successful dart player of all time.
