Devon Petersen has continued his form with a straight sets
victory over Jose de Sousa on his
World Grand Prix debut defying eight 180’s in
a thrilling encounter.
Petersen swept to the opening set 3-1 after De Sousa had initially
claimed the impetus to begin proceedings. A 13-darter saw Petersen go one up in
the second set but De Sousa hit two 180’s and a 61 checkout to go 2-1 up with a
break of throw.
He couldn’t conclude the set initially though despite
hitting a sixth 180 but he missed double 12 for a 144 and Petersen forced a
decider.
It was a decider which he claimed with a 15 darter in which
he hit a 93 checkout on the bullseye with De Sousa sat on 40 for the set.
Mervyn King is also through after claiming a straight sets
victory to see over two-time champion
James Wade to continue his impressive
form from Hildesheim with four 180’s to his name en route.
King made an impressive start against Wade hitting ¾ on his
finishing doubles to claim the opening set 3-1 and despite it being tied up at
1-1 in the requisite set, he continued this into the second.
A 14-darter saw him go one away from victory and a 66 checkout
last dart in hand on double 18 saw him claim it with Wade sat on a 65 checkout
to level the tie up and force a decider.
