The ninth night of the Premier League Darts in Berlin produced a surprising turn of events in the competition. Stephen Bunting, who until this evening was still dangling without points at the bottom of the rankings, experienced a dream night and won his first Premier League evening by beating Gerwyn Price 6-5 in a thrilling final.
The evening already began with a remarkable development. Michael van Gerwen had to withdraw with a shoulder injury, which automatically gave Gerwyn Price a spot in the semifinals. This gave the Welshman a unique opportunity to strengthen his position in the rankings, and he seized it with both hands.
Luke Littler, who has been leading the rankings for weeks, had a tough night. The young sensation was surprisingly beaten 6-2 in the quarterfinals by Chris Dobey, who earned his fourth win of the season. Luke Humphries, who is second in the competition, defeated Rob Cross and managed to slightly increase his lead over the chasing pack.
In the semifinals, Bunting followed up his 6-2 win over Nathan Aspinall by beating Luke Humphries 6-2. Gerwyn Price defeated Chris Dobey in his semi-final to reach the final. In a thrilling final, Bunting eventually prevailed to win 6-5 and book his first ever Premier League weekly title.
Despite an early defeat, Littler still holds the lead by a wide margin. Littler stands at 26 points, while Humphries narrowed the gap slightly, bringing his total to 20 points. Price is the new number three with 15 points after his third final spot of the season.
The withdrawal cost Van Gerwen one spot in the rankings. He now occupies the fourth spot with 13 points, while Cross is breathing down his neck with 12 points. Behind him follow Aspinall (10 points) and Dobey (7 points). Bunting has his first five points in, but with that he is still in last place.
