Gerwyn Price has retained the Grand Slam of Darts title with victory over Peter Wright in an exceptional 16-6 victory in Wolverhampton.
Price averaged 107 in victory and hit 52 percent on the doubles; as he showed exactly why he is one of the best players in the world right now. He retains the Eric Bristow trophy in one of the best performances in a major final; which is up there with the record average which he nearly broke.
The first few legs were very much even and Price went into the break at 3-2 up; with Wright 23 points behind on the averages and potentially sinking first.
Price put himself in a 4-2 lead with an excellent 111 checkout; as he looked to build a real lead in the early going. Wright hit his second 180 but only for Price to hit an 84 checkout for 5-3. Price followed up a 174 setup with double 16 to extend it to 6-3.
Price went 7-3 up at the next interval; it was a 113 average, six 180's and 7/9 on the doubles. Wright ended up closing the gap to 4-7 and they from there kicked off the 12th leg with six perfect darts and Wright five but it was Wright who broke to go 5-7 behind.
Wright hits his fourth 180 but Price ended up hitting a 14 darter for a 9-5 lead and kept up his high average at 112. Price stretched his lead to 11-5 from there with a 110 average keeping his demon form. A break of throw from Price, a 177 and tops saw him continue that as he continued his crusade at 12-5 up.
Another break saw him go 14-5 up as he looked towards the finishing line. It ended up getting eight consecutive legs now for Price as he went to within one of retaining the title at 15-5, an absolute demon session from the Welshman as he romped towards a second consecutive Grand Slam title.
Price had match darts but they went and Wright ended up picking up the pieces to go 15-6 behind. He finally finished it off with a double five to really silence the critics.
