The new season of the 2024 Premier League Darts finally gets underway Thursday night. The Welsh capital Cardiff has been given the honor of opening the new season.
According to many, it will be the most interesting edition in years. This is mainly due to the participation of teenager Luke Littler, who will undoubtedly cause quite a stir.
The 17-year-old Englishman - then at the age of 16 - reached the final of the World Darts Championship. He lost to Luke Humphries, but after that Littler also reached the final of the World Series tournaments in Bahrain and Den Bosch. Littler managed to win the tournament in Bahrain, giving him a last-minute PDC senior tournament as a 16-year-old.
'The Nuke' will make his Premier League debut against Humphries. This is no surprise, as traditionally the first round of play features a repeat of the World Championship final. However, it is not the first meeting between the two players since Alexandra Palace, because they also met last weekend at the Dutch Darts Masters. Then the win went 6-5 to Littler.
Michael van Gerwen begins his new Premier League season against Michael Smith. With a win over "Bullyboy," Van Gerwen will play Humphries or Littler in the semifinals.
The first match of the 2024 Premier League Darts is between Peter Wright and Rob Cross. Gerwyn Price will also be in action. The former world champion will play in front of his own crowd against Nathan Aspinall.
Format
The eight participants will play sixteen tournaments. It will be arranged so that a player meets the other participants twice in a quarterfinal. During two weeks of play, in the eighth and sixteenth weeks of play, the draw will be based on the points standings.
Points can be scored with results during the sixteen tournaments. A semifinal earns two points, a second place three points and a tournament win five points and a £10,000 bonus.
Based on these points, the new Premier League Darts rankings are formed. The top four players will advance to the Premier League Darts playoffs.
