Nathan Aspinall's impressive winning run at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool has come to an end. After six consecutive victories, James Wade ended this series on Tuesday night by beating 'The Asp' 11-8.
Aspinall managed to add the prestigious World Matchplay title to his resume last year. At the time, he defeated successively Martin Schindler (10-8), Danny Noppert (11-9), Chris Dobey (16-12), Joe Cullen (17-9) and Jonny Clayton (18-6) to lift the Phil Taylor Trophy.
It was clear beforehand that it would be a miracle if the Englishman took the title again at the World Matchplay. Aspinall is known to be having problems again with an injury to his throwing arm. After this tournament, the darter from Stockport will undergo medical treatment that will keep him out of action for two to three months. The question was still, how soon Aspinall could start this recovery process. If he got past the quarterfinals, he could not get an appointment until mid-August. But Wade arranged for Aspinall to report for the start of his treatment as early as this Friday.
Aspinall managed to make up a 4-0 deficit at the beginning of the match and for a long time showed why he is known for his fighter's mentality, but in the end the two-time major winner had to give in against The Machine.
A day after his defeat, Aspinall came out with a brief response via Instagram Stories. ''Well it's been an honour being the Matchplay champion the past 12 months,'' he began his post. ''I tried my best up there last night but at 8-8 my arm just had enough. I'll go away now and get the necessary treatment done and will be back stronger. See you all hopefully in September,'' Aspinall concluded.
Aspinall will therefore miss at least five Pro Tour tournaments and one Euro Tour tournament in the coming weeks. He may be able to make his comeback at the Flanders Darts Trophy in Antwerp from Sept. 6 to 8.
