Smith on continued major final failure at UK Open: “I was absolute garbage, I’m trying too hard”

Michael Smith made it eight major finals without winning one with a narrow defeat to Danny Noppert at the 2022 UK Open.

Smith adds to his recent defeat in the 2022 PDC World Darts Championship as well as prior losses in the Masters, World Matchplay, World Championship, World Series Finals and Premier League.

This is stretching back to 2018 with his first defeat in the Premier League and as expected, Smith was dejected post match and blamed for trying too hard to win as the issue in what was seen as his best chance.

“I was absolute garbage. I’m trying too hard to win a tournament,” said Smith on stage post match.

“I could have walked away with that 11-3, my doubles were so bad and my scoring was bad but fair play to Danny.”
