Alan Soutar is through to the second round of the 2021/22 PDC
World Darts Championship after surviving a spirited display from Diogo Portela.
Soutar recovered from a set down to see off the Brazilian ace who produced one of his best displays on the Ally Pally stage in defeat but it will be Mensur Suljovic who will await the Scot.
Soutar took an opening break in the tie with Portela answering that and he continued his impetus from there with a superb leg pinning double eight to hold and go one away from the set.
The Scot took out double 16 to force a decider. Soutar missed darts for the opening set and Portela took it. He took the opening leg of the second set though with an 85 checkout.
A 44 checkout though saw Portela go six darts into a nine-dart finish and continue to take the game to the Scot. A third 180 followed for Brazilliant but Soutar took out 106 to level up.
Soutar took the set though on double eight to return to the foray. He couldn’t make a dent at 135 and as a result, Portela pinned double four for the lead. The same target was pinned by Soutar to level.
He had a chance to break and did so on double 16 and he was one away from a 2-1 sets lead. An 84 checkout saw Soutar lead 2-1 in sets as he made it 6/8 on legs.
Despite some initial double trouble, Soutar hit double three to lead in a pivotal set. Portela kept in proceedings though with an 81 checkout to break.
Soutar returned with a last dart in hand 80 checkout to go one away from a debut win on the Ally Pally stage. A superb salvo in the form of an 11-darter to break for Portela saw him make it 2-2 in sets.
Soutar claimed a break to begin the final set and with a 180 and with double 16 he held to go one away. Portela kept himself in the tie with a 124 on the bull.
Soutar had to serve it out and began with a brilliant 180 and got down to 122 which he missed on double 16 to conclude it. He returned though for double eight and the win.
