It wasn't the highest standard between the pair but Teehan took his chances to set up a clash with Mervyn King in the next round and looked unfazed against the experienced player who has been in-form for parts of this year.
Teehan played well in the first set sealing it in a deciding leg with a 99 average, three 180's and 70 percent on the doubles as the World Masters Quarter-Finalist acclimatised well to the Alexandra Palace stage.
He led the requisite set but Smith gave himself a chance with a nine-darter attempt which forced a deciding leg. This was in vein though as the Irishman powered to a two set lead and looked good in the process.
He broke through to begin the next set but Smith came back to finish 38 and break straight back to put himself back into the tie. Teehan went one away though with an excellent 107 checkout.
The Irishman claimed victory on his fourth match dart to ease past the Deal ace and move through to the next round.
