Another World Series of Darts event Down Under, another early exit for Ross Smith. 'Smudger' missed two match darts as
Brody Klinge produced a
marvellous 6-5 win, one of the biggest of his career at the
Australian Darts Masters.
In front of a passionate home crowd, Klinge delivered in truly remarkable fashion. Despite Smith averaging 102.88 with eight 180's thrown in the mix, too many missed doubles proved costly at the business end.
Klinge was able to keep up with the former European champion and ended up taking his chance right at the end,
taking out 100 in two as he wrapped up the win, dealing a second dose of misery to Smith in his World Series debut, still waiting for his first win following a similar turn of events last week in Auckland.
Following the match, Klinge reacted jubilantly. “I’m over the moon with that. That was the adrenaline rush of my life,” he stated.
Klinge was the only local challenger to make it past the PDC favourites. No one else got more than three legs as he waved the Aussie flag on stage valiantly. It is not the first time competing in the
Australian Darts Masters, losing 6-1 in the first round against Stephen Bunting last year.
“I felt a lot more comfortable playing this time around and it showed in my performance I think," he analysed. “Ross was throwing everything at me. I was lucky he missed at the end there, but I took my chance."
There is no pressure from this point with every win a bonus. There is no tougher test than the world number two Gian van Veen, the highest ranked player competing. That has not put Klinge off. “I’m on a free rein now. I’m just going to do my best and keep going. There’s no pressure on me.”
