Alex Spellman has become the latest darter to qualify for the World Darts Championships after coming out on top in the CDC Continental Cup, defeating David Cameron 8-5 in the final.
After just missing out on qualification through the
CDC Pro Tour, The Jackal was first in line to qualify if the winner has already booked their place at Ally Pally later this year. Either that or winning it, which is what he did.
The Jackal joins Leonard Gates, Adam Sevada, Stowe Buntz, and Cameron as the North Americans who will feature at Ally Pally. Not only that, but by winning this prestigious event he has qualified for the
Grand Slam of Darts in November for the first time.
The top 16 ranked players on the CDC Pro Tour make up the line-up in New York, with 12 Americans and four Canadians making up the starting list. One of them was 3-time World Champion John Part who was unable to get past the number one seed Sevada.
In fact, the top eight seeds all avoided upset and advanced into the quarter-finals. Spellman completed this with a 5-3 win over Nick Linberg, before defeating Gates in a last-leg decider. He would now face Sevada for a slot in the final.
Spellman raced into a 2-0 lead before an 11-darter from Sevada began a run of three legs on the spin to cannon him infront. Spellman replied with three legs of his own, before wrapping up proceedings with a clinical 11-darter to win 7-5 and go through to the final, where Cameron was awaiting. His qualification for the World Championships was set in stone at this point, but he had his eyes on the title.
He took the first leg before Cameron ominously won five consecutive legs to go 5-1 ahead. He was sitting on tops to go 6-1 ahead before The Jackal took out 146, changing the trajectory of this final. The Canadian would not win another leg in this final as Spellman completed a stunning comeback, winning seven legs on the spin to clinch the title.
This result will see him make his first steps into the Grand Slam of Darts ahead of his second appearance at Ally Pally. He featured last year but was drawn a tough opponent in Ryan Joyce. Despite managing to grab a set off Relentless, he succumbed to a 3-1 defeat.
