Luke Littler surprised the darts world early this year by reaching the final of the World Darts Championship as a 16-year-old debutant. Since then, there has been constant highlights for the English talent, who captured no fewer than 10 titles in his debut year on the PDC Pro Tour.
Now, it has been announced that Luke Littler is Google's "Athlete of the Year" during their annual search results. Google's Year in Search provides insight into which famous people were most searched for in 2024 and what were the most frequently asked questions about them in the United Kingdom.
Littler was named Athlete of the Year. In addition, the 17-year-old darter also placed third on the People of the Year list behind Kate Middleton and Donald Trump.
Littler's rise was also recognized by his nominations for BBC Sports Personality of the Year and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. After receiving the award, Littler said, "I'm really grateful for all the support people have given me and the growing interest in darts is amazing to see. I hope my journey inspires more young people into the sport."
Matt Cooke of Google News said of the Google 2024 search trends, "2024 has been a year of comebacks, curiosity, and community. Whether it’s fans reuniting for Oasis, young sports stars like Luke Littler making waves, or Brits voting in everything from elections to Eurovision, these searches show a nation full of passion and interest. It's amazing to see what captivated the UK."
Littler topped the Athletes category, ahead of footballer Lamine Yamal and gymnast Simone Biles. In the All People list, Littler was third behind Kate Middleton and Donald Trump, but ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles in the top ten.
