"It's a learning experience, and I'll take it with me into next time" – Maikel Verberk rues missed opportunities on his Euro Tour debut

Maikel Verberk could not cap his European Tour debut with a win. The 27-year-old from Oss gave Damon Heta a strong test on Friday evening, but eventually lost 6-4 to the Australian at the Dutch Darts Championship in Maastricht. Even so, Verberk came away with a positive feeling after his first appearance on the big stage.

The Dutchman qualified for the Dutch Darts Championship through the host nation qualifier. A tough opponent awaited him in his first European Tour appearance. Heta, Australia’s number one, reached the world’s top 16 several years ago and currently sits 21st in the rankings.
Verberk fights back from behind
The experience gap was barely noticeable in the opening stages. Both players started solidly and initially held their own legs.
Heta struck the first break in the sixth leg to move 4-2 ahead. Verberk then found it increasingly difficult to match the Australian’s scoring pace. The former top-16 player took advantage and stretched his lead to 5-2.

An early exit looked likely, but Verberk fought back in style. A superb 130 checkout cut the deficit and brought the MECC crowd back on his side.
Heta then began to make mistakes, allowing the Dutchman to take the next leg as well. At 5-4, Verberk needed one more break to force a deciding 11th leg. It was not to be. Heta had three match darts in the 10th leg and took his final chance to seal a 6-4 win.

“There were plenty of chances”
After the match, Verberk spoke to Viaplay. He was pleased with his first European Tour appearance, but felt an upset had been possible. "It was a great experience. I would have liked to have finished it with a win. I think there was more in it, because there were plenty of opportunities," he said to Viaplay.
The Dutchman sees the performance mainly as valuable experience for the next stage of his darts career. "It's a learning experience, and I'll take it with me into next time."

The event in Maastricht was the biggest stage Verberk had played on to date. The impressive setting made an impact on the player from Oss, though he felt he handled himself well during the match. "But I had the nerves under control. I now hope to make progress."
Despite the defeat, Verberk hopes his first taste of the European Tour will not be a one-off. He is keen to qualify for more events like this. "This has definitely left me wanting more. I hope to come back here many more times."

- I love Jonny but I disagree. The Grand Slam was always supposed to be "champion of champions" type competition. If the top 16 are guaranteed participation in everything there will be so much less jeopardy involved in qualifying and each major tournament will lose its unique flavour which the PDC has worked hard trying to develop. I enjoy following the qualification races towards the end of the year, and while consistency should have its rewards, the truth is Jonny hasn't reached a major final all year or won a single event on the Pro Tour. Being consistent is one thing, but that alone should have consequences as the sport's elite should not be prepared to accept consistently strong performances, their foremost motivation should be to win and this should be what separates them from the rest, not the consistency of their performances.
