From Sunday, December 15th to Friday, January 3rd, the world title will be fought for at the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship in London. In this article, you will find the highest losing averages in the history of this prestigious tournament.
Somewhat curiously, in the top five highest losing averages at the World Darts Championship are no less than three Dutchmen. The other two high losing averages were thrown against a Dutchman.
Leading the list is Raymond van Barneveld, who lost to Michael van Gerwen at the 2017 World Cup with 109.34 average. The latter threw an average of 114.05 points per turn in this match. To date, this is still the highest average ever at the World Championships. This all-Dutch semifinal is unsurprisingly, also the match with the highest combined average in PDC World Darts Championship history. The combined average finished at 223.39, almost ten points higher than the 2017 World Championship final between Van Gerwen and Anderson (212.72).
Spot two is in the name of Jeffrey de Zwaan, who threw 106.09 points per turn in his lost against Rob Cross in 2019. During the 2017 edition, Cristo Reyes came up short against Van Gerwen despite an average of 106.07.
The same Van Gerwen lost to Van Barneveld a year earlier with a 105.78 average. Rounding out the top five is Gary Anderson. The Scot lost the 2017 World Championship final to Van Gerwen despite an average of 104.93 points per turn. Notably, the Dutchman threw the highest tournament average ever at the World Darts Championship during that edition.
109.34 Raymond van Barneveld (2017 semifinal, 2-6 against Michael van Gerwen)
106.09 Jeffrey de Zwaan (Second round 2019, 1-3 against Rob Cross)
106.07 Cristo Reyes (Second round 2017, 2-4 against Michael van Gerwen)
105.78 Michael van Gerwen (Third round 2016, 3-4 against Raymond van Barneveld)
104.93 Gary Anderson (2017 Final, 3-7 against Michael van Gerwen)
