Bradley Brooks has announced via
social media that he will not be in action over the coming days at Players Championships 13 and 14. The tournaments are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Hildesheim, but Brooks is forced to withdraw due to passport issues.
The former World Youth Champion had planned to travel to Germany, where the
Players Championship events are being staged. At check-in, nothing seemed amiss at first: he was able to drop his luggage and pass the initial controls. Only at the moment of boarding was he told he would not be allowed to travel.
Passport problems
The reason? Although his passport was still valid for seven months, the document had exceeded the maximum validity of ten years since issuance. As a result, it no longer meets the entry requirements within the Schengen Area. A harsh and frustrating rule, which Brooks himself says he overlooked.
Extra galling is that the error was only noticed so late. Normally, airlines check these matters at check-in, as they are responsible for transporting passengers with valid travel documents. In this case, that verification came at the last moment, with all the consequences that entails.
"No Germany for me for the next few days. Had 7 months left on my passport… but didn’t know as soon as it’s 10 years from when it was issued you can’t use it!," he wrote on social media.
"My own fault really… just a bit s*** they let me check in, took my bag and waited until I was boarding to tell me."
Bradley Brooks is currently ranked 68th in the world
Battle for the top 64 and retention of PDC Tour Card
For Brooks, who secured his PDC Tour Card early last year and is locked in a fierce battle for the top 64, it means missing key ProTour events, which could impact his position in the rankings and his chances of qualifying for major televised tournaments.
The Englishman will now have to renew his passport as soon as possible to avoid further issues. Whether he will be ready in time for the next events is still uncertain at this moment.
