Michael Smith and
Peter Wright did not survive the group stage of the
Grand Slam of Darts. It is the first time in the history of this tournament that the numbers one and two in the world rankings have not made it past the group stage.
For Smith, the tournament already came to an end on Monday. 'Bullyboy' had not won his first two matches widely enough, so he also had to win his group match against James Wade. However, 'The Machine' won 5-1 against the world number one, forcing defending champion Smith out of the field in Wolverhampton.

A 5-4 victory over Dave Chisnall kept 'Snakebite' in the race for a spot in the knockout stage, but he still had to deal with Stephen Bunting. That didn't work out as Wright went down 5-3 to 'The Bullet';
With Wright's elimination, Michael van Gerwen can make an attempt to retake second place on the PDC Order of Merit from 'Snakebite' at the Grand Slam of Darts. To accomplish that, Van Gerwen must reach the last four at the Grand Slam of Darts.
