Dirk van Duijvenbode is through to his maiden major Quarter-Final at the
World Grand Prix after seeing off
Dimitri van den Bergh in a closely fought victory.
Van Duijvenbode averaged 89 and hit 45% on his starting double with 55% on his finishing doubles compared to 39% for Van den Bergh on the latter which proved the difference in four close sets.
The first set was a tale of missed big numbers with Van Duijvenbode
stepped in to claim an early lead and despite the Belgian returning to send the
first set the distance, he once again missed the big number and one set dart which
allowed the Dutch debutant to claim the first set.
He streaked further clear to break the throw in the first
leg of the second set but Van den Bergh came back to break back at 1-1. ‘The
Dreammaker’ held throw to make it 2-1 but Van Duijvenbode forced a decider and
another costly big number missed saw the latter go 2-0 up in sets.
Van den Bergh claimed control of the third set though as Van
Duijvenbode couldn’t streak to the finishing line and the former dug deep to
convert in a decider.
He took the lead in set four but Van Duijvenbode wasn’t
about to relinquish proceedings as he took out 97 to go to within a leg of
victory. He left 32 after starting off first time of asking and he
pinned it first time with Van den Bergh sat on 51 in the decider.
