Two of the World's top three have begun their
Grand Slam of Darts campaigns with contrasting performances in
Michael van Gerwen and
Gerwyn Price.
Van Gerwen was a potential question mark heading into tonight with two early exits in the PDC Winter Series after a recurring back problem marred the end of his World Cup of Darts campaign but he eased past Adam Hunt in a sensational display.
Mighty Mike averaged 105.8 to whitewash the North East debutant despite not hitting any 180's but he was clinical on an area which has been a problem in doubling with 5/9 and a high checkout of 100. A tricky test will await though tomorrow when he plays Gabriel Clemens who saw off Joe Cullen earlier tonight.
While for Price, he nearly suffered a defeat to start his defence of his Grand Slam of Darts title as he was pushed all the way once more by Mikuru Suzuki.
Suzuki hasn't really played a lot since the World Championship at the start of the year in both codes with the BDO seeing her become the Ladies World Champion but she nearly defeated 'The Iceman' missing four match darts in the decider.
A brilliant 135 and 116 were hit en route by 'The Miracle' but Price snatched victory in the end to deny her a famous victory on the opening night.
