Van Gerwen for the first time since 2011 without titles in February

Michael van Gerwen is still waiting for a first title in 2020. After losing three finals in the first two months of the year, he is still winless.

The world-number-one lost on January 1 in the World Championship final to Peter Wright and also has lost in two finals on the Pro Tour. Ryan Searle and Gerwyn Price both managed to beat Van Gerwen in a Players Championship final.

In 2011, it was the last time that Mighty Mike did not win a PDC title in the first two months of a year. Nine years ago he got rid of his title hoodoo on April 30, winning a PDC Youth Tour event.

It went faster in 2012, when he won a UK Open Qualifier on February 12. The 30-year-old won two UK Open Qualifiers in 2013. In 2014 he claimed two more titles in February after winning his first world title.

In 2015, just like in 2016 and 2018, he had claimed no less than five PDC titles after the end of February. In between, Van Gerwen won three titles in the first two months of 2017 and four in 2019.

However the three-time world champion has a chance to put this right to begin March. The Belgian Darts Championship starts in Hasselt on February 28. The final day will be played on 1 March.
