No treble for Price ❌ Gerwyn Price cannot make it three Players Championship events in a row as he loses in the opening round to Jim Williams, despite averaging 106.54! All results 👉 tv.dartconnect.com/event/pdcpc23e…
Michael van Gerwen has marked his darting return with victory over Tony Martinez to open Players Championship 19 in Barnsley, albeit with other top names not having similar success.
Van Gerwen has not been seen since his World Matchplay exit to Brendan Dolan spending most of his time off on holiday with family.
He decided to skip Australia and New Zealand with recent surgeries off the oche and also family time being a priority due to the grueling nature of the current calendar. But he averaged 100 in his first match whitewashing Tony Martinez in a good sign that his game is still very much there.
Other well known names and top seeds to make it through include Dave Chisnall who is top seed, Joe Cullen, Damon Heta, Peter Wright, Ross Smith, Rob Cross and Ryan Searle. As well as World Number One, Michael Smith.
But other top names didn't fare as well with Gerwyn Price losing early to Jim Williams 6-5 despite averaging 106 after winning the last two ProTours. Jonny Clayton has spent time away from darts due to his father being ill and like Van Gerwen skipped the last World Series, it was a 6-1 loss to Ryan Meikle today.
Luke Humphries also didn't head down under and lost 6-5 to Ian White despite averaging 100. Josh Rock is also gone with the fifth seed losing to Richard Veenstra.
