Michael van Gerwen captured his first title of the year last weekend at the Nordic Darts Masters. The 32-year old Dutchman let his tears flow afterwards.
Van Gerwen defeated Fallon Sherrock 11-7 in the final of the Nordic Darts Masters. Although it was a non ranking tournament, the Dutchman was just as happy. "If you come out of such a difficult period, then it is only about winning. At that moment it does not matter what kind of tournament it is. This victory means extremely much to me. I am a real winner and I have been beat many times during a long time. You have to fight your way out of that difficult period. That's why this title is so satisfying", said van Gerwen to AD.
Emotions
After throwing the winning double, van Gerwen burst into tears. "At a time like that you're still full of adrenaline. There has been a lot of pressure on me. You have to have an answer to that. I am not here to bake cookies, but to win a tournament. After many setbacks I succeeded again. I am also grateful for the people who have always supported me. That's paying off now and it's just creating emotions."
MVG was untouchable in the PDC for a long time, but suddenly that era was over. "Of course the corona era didn't help, but everyone has to deal with that. You have to keep doing your best, invest in yourself and keep fighting. For me, the long time without a title has definitely been uncomfortable. For someone with my qualities it took too long. I just really had to deal with a lot of blows, but you have to turn the tide yourself."
World title
Van Gerwen was loudly applauded by the crowd in Copenhagen, Denmark, after his victory. "A magnificent moment, absolutely goose bumps. You've really missed something like that and it gives you an enormous boost. But don't think I am going to win tournaments every week again. The field is too strong for that. This is mainly a boost. Ultimately, only the world title counts, but it is not easier.”
