Huw Ware, one of the PDC’s regular referees, has a unique personal link to the hit television series Gavin & Stacey. The Welsh official, who is from the seaside town of Barry, revealed that his family home was right at the heart of the show’s now iconic setting.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Ware recalled how the whole thing began on Trinity Street. “I remember being in my nan’s sister’s house on Trinity Street, and she said to us, ‘Oh, they’re going to start filming a new TV show across the road in a couple of weeks.’”
At the time, it felt like something completely out of the ordinary for the town. “We all thought, ‘Oh, that’s very exciting,’ because nothing like that ever happened in Barry.”
Only later did they realise what was unfolding on their doorstep. “Turns out it was Gavin and Stacey, so my auntie lives opposite Stacey and Gwen’s house.”
The connection went even further than that, placing his family directly within the show’s most recognisable backdrop. “She lives next door to Bryn on the other side.”

Christmas in July on Trinity Street

One particular memory stands out for Ware, and it involved transforming the street for a festive episode. “One of the Christmas specials, they knocked on my nan’s sister’s door and said, ‘Would you mind if we put up some Christmas decorations in the middle of the house?’”
The timing made it even more surreal. “It was in the middle of July, and they paid them a bit of money to do that. They said, ‘Yeah, sure, no problem.’”
When the series finally aired, the reaction in Barry was simple curiosity about how their town would look on screen. “When Gavin and Stacey first went out, all of us in Barry tuned into BBC Three just to see Barry on television.”
At that point, no one had any idea what the show would become. “We had no idea what the show was going to be like.”
For Ware, those memories remain a fond reminder of how a quiet Welsh street unexpectedly became part of British television history, long before he went on to make his own mark on the world stage in darts.
