Darts has seen a surge in popularity in Belgium in recent years, evolving into a full-fledged national craze. But this year, the performances of most of the country’s Tour Card holders have fallen far short of expectations. The backlash on social media has been relentless, and for Andy Baetens - currently ranked 70th in the world - it all seems to have become too much.

Belgian darts reached its peak last year, with major title wins by Dimitri Van den Bergh and Mike De Decker. Alongside them, Belgium boasts four other Tour Card holders: Kim Huybrechts, Mario Vandenbogaerde, Andy Baetens, and Stefaan Henderyck. So far this season, only De Decker has managed to maintain a positive win-loss record. Vandenbogaerde, after a sluggish start, has also shown promising form in recent weeks.

The rest of the Belgian contingent, however, are struggling. Losses have outnumbered wins by a wide margin—Van den Bergh included. The two-time major champion continues to slide down the world rankings. Criticism has been particularly fierce in the Facebook group ‘Belgische Darters,’ home to nearly 20,000 passionate fans.

“Dimi out in the first round again. Something has to change or things will really go downhill for him. An average of just 85? That won’t cut it at this level. What’s going on with him? Come on, Dimi!” wrote one member. Another added: “Sorry, but it’s always something. It’s all in his head. He should just quit - this is only going to get worse.”

The impact of these comments hasn’t gone unnoticed by the players. Normally mild-mannered Baetens broke his silence with a fiery response on Facebook: “Maybe it’s time to stop with all the commentary,” he wrote. “It would help a lot - bunch of whiners. We’re human beings, not robots. And if you all think you can do better, then come and show us. We’ll see who’s laughing then. Kind regards, The Beast from the East.”
