"We're now one step further and we believe in ourselves!" - Austria duo dreaming of second World Cup final in four years

Austria has qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2024 World Cup of Darts. Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez defeated Taiwan 8-4 in the second round.

Taiwan had still surprisingly worked its way through the group stage by beating Ireland and Lithuania. "We knew we shouldn't underestimate Taiwan," Rodriguez reflected in their post-match press conference. "It was a good start and we had good timing before the break and afterwards."

Austria have previously reached the final at the World Cup of Darts once before, back in 2021. "We'll take each game after each game," says Rodriguez, not getting too far ahead of himself. "We won today, we have to win tomorrow and we're going to win tomorrow!"

Mensur Suljovic has always been there since the start of the World Cup of Darts in 2010

"In 2021, we weren't fancied, we were seen as an outsider," Rodriguez recalls. "Nobody thought we would be in the final and so why not this year? We're now one step further and we believe in ourselves!"

Suljovic won a major in the past with the (now defunct) Champions League of Darts. "But don't ask me to compare that title to any title at the World Cup of Darts," he says. "This is totally different, here I am playing for Rowby and for my country. I want to make them proud."

In the quarter-finals, Austria will now face off against the Croatian duo of Boris Krcmar and Romeo Grbavac after they stunned reigning World Cup of Darts champions Wales in the last 16 on Saturday night.
