The
Grand Slam of Darts has begun with
Simon Whitlock and
Dirk van Duijvenbode getting off the mark in their respective groups on Saturday afternoon.
Whitlock produced a superb display to open the tournament with a 5-2 success to see off Mensur Suljovic. He produced a 97.2 average with five 180's and 50% on the doubles.
Despite having injury concerns pre-tournament, he dispelled them with an early win and gets off and running in Group B.
While Van Duijvenbode sealed a deciding leg win over Martin Schindler hitting back-to-back 180's and an 83 checkout in the decider to edge through 5-4 with a 102.8 average.
Van Duijvenbode had surged to the front early on but Schindler produced a mid match surge to go 4-3 up with a 133 checkout. The German missed a match dart at the bull and Van Duijvenbode forced a decider timing his run to perfection.
