World Darts Championship sensation David Munyua returns to Alexandra Palace after nail-biting decider in Kenya

David Munyua has again secured his place at the World Darts Championship. The 30-year-old Kenyan won Sunday’s Northern Africa Qualifier of the African Dart Group and will return to Alexandra Palace in December. In a gripping final he edged compatriot Evans Njuguna only in the deciding leg.

Munyua made history last year as the first Kenyan ever to appear on the Alexandra Palace stage and win a match. At the qualifying event in Nairobi he has now booked a second consecutive appearance at the sport’s biggest tournament.
The Kenyan started his qualifier in ruthless fashion. He did not drop a single leg in his first two matches, then beat Ugandan Acidri Isaac Passi 5-1 to reach the quarter-finals.
Munyua was unstoppable in the last eight as well. Okalany Robert Clegg was brushed aside 6-0, setting up an all-Kenyan semi-final against Peter Wanjii.
There, for the first time, Munyua had to dig deep. He trailed 5-3 but then showed the value of his Ally Pally experience. Four straight legs turned the match on its head and he closed it out 7-5.
Munyua produced one of last year’s biggest Ally Pally shocks by beating Mike De Decker 3-2 in sets on his Worlds debut.
Seven match darts needed in the decider
In the final Munyua faced Evans Njuguna, who came equally close to a first Worlds appearance. There was little between them and at 7-6 up Njuguna even had a match dart, attempting to finish 81.

He could not take it and Munyua forced a last-leg shootout. There he seemed set to finish the job quickly. After 12 darts he was on 56, but the tension rose sharply.
Munyua missed no fewer than seven match darts before finally finding double 10. With that, after a nerve-racking climax, he sealed his return to Alexandra Palace.
The Kenyan had already delivered a landmark moment for African darts at the last Worlds. Munyua defeated former World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker to become the first Kenyan to win on the Ally Pally stage. In December he gets the chance to make history again.

For Njuguna the disappointment was heavy. He was literally one dart away from debuting at Alexandra Palace, after an excellent qualifying campaign in Nairobi.
Njuguna opened with back-to-back 4-1 wins and then beat Darius Nyenyo 5-2. He followed up with a notable result, knocking top seed Peter Waichuri out in a deciding leg.
In the semi-finals Njuguna impressed again, defeating Festus Chepkwony 7-3. He had his chance in the final too, but the missed match dart at double 10 proved costly. His first World Championship appearance will have to wait at least another year.
For now, Munyua is the first African qualifier to punch his Worlds ticket. The Southern Africa Qualifier is scheduled for 01.11.2026. There we will learn which other African representative will join the Kenyan on the Alexandra Palace stage.

- I loved Jan and loved his walk on music "Explode" by Jordan & Baker. I think if he stuck around the BDO he definitely would have been World Champion, should have won in 2014, he never really showed any of his talent in the PDC. I remembered he worked in a bank or in finance and maybe that was his priority, he was also a fan and interested in magic. Definitely should have achieved much more in darts than he did.
