Peter Wright has become the ninth new World Championship winner in PDC history with victory on New Years Day against Michael van Gerwen.

Wright as well becomes the oldest first time winner and the second oldest winner in history; behind Phil Taylor who claimed 16 World titles.
Michael van Gerwen is currently on three World Championship titles; but could not become only the third player after Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis to go back-to-back.
He also joins other Scottish winners overall in the aforementioned Gary Anderson (x2), Les Wallace (x1) and Jocky Wilson (x2) meaning if he can retain his title next year; he will join two Scottish greats in having claimed it again.
