Wright leads Van Gerwen on post PDC World Championship Order of Merit

Michael van Gerwen's World Number One spot in the PDC Order of Merit is becoming very much endangered with Peter Wright currently in pole position to take over after the PDC World Championship.

Since January 2014, Van Gerwen has been dominant in the PDC Order of Merit and darts as a whole but as of late, he has been unable to defend titles and is losing prize money rapidly.

Of the five ranking majors this year, the three-time World Champion only managed to win the UK Open. Wright on the otherhand has claimed the World Championship and European Championship.

With his last title at the European Championship, Wright has now passed his Dutch rival in the virtual Order of Merit after the World Championship Darts. The margin is in favour of the Scot by £ 78,250.

If Snakebite wins the world title again, he will be the new number one in the world after the World Championship come what may. However, Gerwyn Price also has the chance to take over also with a possible World Championship.

On the virtual Order of Merit, all the prize money that players have to defend has been removed. That is a big amount especially for Van Gerwen who won the World Championship two years ago, reached the final at the Players Championship Finals and reached the Grand Slam semi-final.

As a result, Van Gerwen will likely have to win the World Championship to erode this gap and stay World Number One.
