Wright looks ahead to European Championship defence: "It would be great if I could retain my title"

Peter Wright will defend his European Championship title this weekend and looks back with fondness to last year's tournament where he defeated James Wade in the final.
Wright had a poor time in Leicester at the World Grand Prix, where he lost to Rob Cross in the opening round.
"Obviously it was disappointing to lose in the first round last week," Wright admitted. "But fair play to Rob, he played great to beat me.
"But that's gone now and I'm glad we have a short turnaround to the European Championship.
"Last year this tournament was great for me personally, I averaged well over 100 in all of my games so it will go down as one of my best tournament performances."
Facing Hempel
First up will be the tricky German, Florian Hempel and he is under no illusion at the task ahead.
"It would be great if I could retain my title, but I know I've got a tough first round draw against Florian, who will be looking to show what he can do on the big stage."

- It happens. Remember, anyone who has watched German and Dutch players in matches - their respective countries will have seen/heard just as bad jeering (if not worse). - Was watching an old World Masters final the other day between Eric Bristow and John Lowe, the crowd respect for both players on throw was first class, not a sound. You can imagine now the idiots who were whistling on De Deckers throw proudly boasting about it on social media. I even turned to my husband and said "Could you imagine this happening if Russ Bray was the referee tonight? At least there would have been a crowd admonishment- Ladies and Gentleman please."
