Peter Wright is successfully through to the semi-finals at the 2020 PDC World Championship claiming a 5-3 victory over Luke Humphries.
Wright said that he was on the verge of collapse yesterday; but dealt with Humphries really well averaging 110 for most of the tie; as well as hitting high checkouts of 170, 161 and 124; with 49 percent on the doubles.
Wright was brilliant in the first set producing brilliant checkouts of 170 and 124; as he claimed the opening set 3-1 to claim the early advantage against Humphries; who could not test the number seven seed in the early going.
In the next set, Wright doubled his lead again with a break of throw; with a 67 checkout and Humphries continued to look downcast; as Wright romped to the set without reply and an excellent 109 average and 6/8 on his doubles.
'Cool Hand Luke' finally got a foothold in the match going 2-1 up; despite Wright forcing a decider, he missed double 12 for a 144 checkout; this allowed Humphries to claim the set and get off the mark finally.
This was soon extinguished; as Wright returned to the foray and to his brilliant best smashing in a 161 checkout en route to claiming a 3-1 set lead; with a 110 average as his brilliance continued.
He continued to be in firm control of the match; as he took the next set 3-1 to go to within one of the semi's, Wright was giving one of the best performances of the year; as he set out his stall to become one of the forerunners in the tournament.
Humphries left himself 44 against the throw to start the next set; 'Cool Hand' took advantage to go 1-0 up. As a result, he claimed the set from there 3-1 to keep the tie very much alive at 2-4 down.
He returned to claim the first leg of the next set with a 14-darter to hold his throw and ask the question of Wright. He missed tops tops for a 100 checkout but Wright could not pounce as he started to miss, Humphries as a result returned to the board and broke his throw.
Wright could not convert a 113 checkout; Humphries claimed the set to make it 3-4. Despite that, Humphries knew he had to convert in the next set and Wright took the first set to go two away himself.
Wright missed bull for a second 170 checkout; in clutch style, Humphries smashed in a double 12 to make it 1-1. Humphries needed to break; but Wright hit a timely 180 to leave 68 and hold throw to go one away.
Wright missed bull for an 83 checkout; but Humphries rushed a 64 checkout and this allowed Wright more darts and he converted on double two.
