Jarno Bottenberg caused a big surprise at Lakeside. The Dutchman beat his compatriot and top favorite Jimmy van Schie 3-1 to qualify for the quarterfinals of the WDF World Championship.
Van Schie opened with a 16-darter to immediately take the first leg of the match. He then missed a 110 finish to make it 2-0, Bottenberg took advantage and equalized via double 10.
In the following leg, Bottenberg did manage to throw 110 off the board, giving him a 1-2 lead. The 23-year-old then produced a 12-darter to take the first leg somewhat surprisingly.
The number two on the ranking list could not keep up with Bottenberg's scoring ability and had to concede the first leg of the second set to his compatriot as well. A 14-darter put Van Schie back on level terms.
Bottenberg managed to keep his own leg and put pressure on his compatriot in the fourth leg with a 180 and 140 score. Van Schie managed to come back to 2-2 via double 1, but the man from Drachten then threw double 15 to extend his lead to 0-2 in sets.
In the third set, van Schie finally got some more space from his opponent and quickly gained a 2-0 lead in legs. Bottenberg hung in there, however, and cleverly came back to 2-2, putting him one leg away from a very big surprise. However, the 31-year-old Brabander did not let this happen and staged the comeback via double 2.
Bottenberg missed a dart on the bullseye in the fourth set to lead 0-2 in legs. Van Schie then also missed two darts on double 8, giving Bottenberg match point via double 16.
Van Schie could not complete the comeback and Bottenberg provided the biggest stunt of the tournament so far by eliminating the top favorite via double 8. Bottenberg will play the winner of the match between Paul Lim and Gary Stone in the quarterfinals.
