Cameron Menzies has breezed through his opener at this year's 2022 WDF
Lakeside World Championship despite a hard fought task at times against Ian Jones.
But with girlfriend Fallon Sherrock watching on, Menzies celebrated exuberantly as he got over the line in a 3-1 win with an 89 average.
Menzies missed double 20 for a 78 checkout to begin the tie but Jones made a mess of 41 allowing ‘Cammy’ back for the break. He laid up 127 on double 20 and pinned it to go 2-0 up and raced through with an 81 checkout on double 12.
He missed 80 on double 10 for the opening leg and Jones broke throw to begin set two. But Menzies hit back with a 107 checkout to make it 1-1. He hit double 20 to go 2-1 up in the set. Jones wasn’t going away pinning double six to hold.
Menzies hit a 180 but handed Jones a chance to break with a 122 on the bull which he took for a setback. The Scot hit an 86 checkout to begin the next set to break.
A poor leg wasn’t pounced upon by Jones and Menzies went 2-0 up and sealed the set from there. A 64 checkout saw Menzies lead the next set. He missed a blocker on double eight to go one away and Jones levelled up.
Menzies missed the chance to hold and Jones broke to go one away from making it 2-2. He hit 152 to leave 13 by accident but missed darts to break back.
He returned with Jones unable to take 128 and hit double four to go one away from the match. He missed 76 on double 12 for the match but returned for double six to claim it.
While
Neil Duff produced a quality display and after originally saying he was going to win 3-0 before the match, he delivered on that promise seeing off Justin Thompson and will now face Nick Fullwell next round.
Duff sealed an opening hold of throw in a confident start from the Northern Irishman. A 48 checkout saw Thompson level up and he hit an 82 checkout to break throw. Duff hit back though and produced a 96 checkout to seal the set.
‘The Duffman’ broke throw and hit double 10 to go 2-0 up and one set away from a two sets lead. A 171 to leave 138 saw Duff in control and he pinned double 10 for an 80 checkout and was 2-0 up.
He missed 57 for an opening hold and Thompson returned for a 149 to break throw. Duff hit a 180 and a 41 checkout saw him break back.
He missed 104 on double 20 to go one away but returned with Thompson missing 122 on the bull for another break and he missed 100 for the hold only to return twice with Duff missing match darts. Finally though he returned in the following leg with a 71 checkout.
