Paige Pauling is the girls champion at the 2024 WDF World Championship defeating Sophie McKinlay 2-0 in the final on Sunday final in what is her 17th WDF youth title of the year.
The 16-year-old defeated McKinlay in straight sets to begin tonight's finals run-in at Lakeside with the Scot who was defeated ironically returning in two games time to play in the women's final.
But it was the top seed Pauling who like McKinlay is touted as a future talent who becomes World Champion. The latter will get another chance but won't be favoured in her contest against Beau Greaves who is searching for three in a row.
Pauling started as she meant to go on with a 16-darter hitting a 140, 121 and double 20 for an early break and consolidated on double 10 for 2-0. McKInlay held throw but Pauling returned to seal the set despite initially spurning chances to win it more comfortably.
McKinlay broke to begin the second set with an 80 checkout after Pauling missed a 115 checkout but the latter broke back as McKinlay spurned opportunities and she held throw from there. It was a superb end for Pauling who hit an 80 checkout.
She went 100, 100, 41, 99 and then an 80 checkout with McKinlay restricted solely to just a 170 meaning Pauling likely would have won it even if she didn't hit 80.
But of course she wasn't going to take that risk against a player who herself will play in the women's final and has had a knack of finding a performance late on in ties to turn it around. Pauling though who is a multiple-time World Master now has a World Championship on her resume to add as she likely now heads towards wanting to join the senior ranks in the coming years.
