Sophie McKinlay could play in two finals this weekend and is into the first as she will face either Beau Greaves or Deta Hedman at the 2024 WDF World Championship.
The Scot is the big surprise of this tournament for now. The 18-year-old player caused a resounding surprise in the first round by eliminating four-time women's world champion Lisa Ashton to start at the Lakeside.
That was followed by a 2-1 win over Irina Armstrong before Aileen de Graaf also faced McKinlay. Rietbergen reached the final four on her debut at Lakeside by defeating Maud Jansson (2-0), Rhian O'Sullivan (2-0) and Aletta Wajer (2-1).
In the third set, Rietbergen fell short mainly in scoring, although she missed a lot of doubles in the second leg. McKinlay had things in better order and won the third set 3-0. Rietbergen then took a 2-0 lead in the fourth set, but let McKinlay come back to 2-2. The Scot then finished it off with a 23-darter.
McKinlay will play in the final against the winner from the duel between Deta Hedman and Beau Greaves. McKinlay may even play a second final, as she is also in the semifinals of the girls' tournament. In the last four, she will meet defending champion Aurora Fochesato.
