Top seed Deta Hedman's quest for a first World Championship will not be sealed at the 2022 WDF edition after losing in straight sets to an impressive display against Aussie ace, Tori Kewish.
Kewish now will face either Lorraine Winstanley or Vicky Pruim who play this evening and is in the same quarter as Aileen de Graaf-Mikuru Suzuki and Beau Greaves-Veronika Ihasz meaning a tough route continues to await.
A 120 checkout for Kewish to break began the opening set. Back-to-back 140’s followed by 80 saw her make it 2-0 up. Hedman kept getting darts to hold but they both kept busting their score before Kewish finally hit double one for the set.
Kewish began set two on double 20 having no double woes this time to hold and lead 1-0. Double 12 saw Kewish go 2-0 up and one away from the win. She began her throw with a 180 and produced another to leave 41 which she sealed to claim victory.
While prior to that, Thibault Tricole survived a scare against Canadian qualifier 'Mr Intensity' Shawn Burt who brought the heat against 'The French Touch' missing six match darts before he swooped in.
Tricole missed set darts to get through the opening set without reply and Burt broke back to make it 2-1 and Burt hit double four to send it all the way. Tricole missed more set darts but finally hit 35 on double eight to go 1-0 up.
Tricole sealed on early break of throw but missed darts to go 2-0 up and Burt levelled up. Tricole broke back though with a 64 checkout to make it 2-1 and he was throwing for a 2-0 sets lead.
He missed set darts and Burt returned for a 60 checkout to make it 2-2 and suddenly Burt was throwing for the set.
He missed 121 on the bull for the set and Tricole couldn’t pin 132 with Burt returning for double 12 to level up.
Tricole hit a 180 but again was missing darts at double which allowed Burt back for 76 for the lead which he doubled on double eight and he sealed the set from there with a 44 checkout.
Tricole went 2-0 up in his pursuit to send it all the way and he pinned double 10 to make it 2-2 in sets.
Burt began the final set by hitting double 18 after Tricole missed 121 on the bull. The French Touch hit double 16 to make it 1-1 before hitting double 10 to go one away.
Burt missed 77 for the decider and Tricole missed 100 allowing the Canadian to send it all the way. But Tricole hit 74 to seal the win.
