The first half of the opening round at the World Seniors Darts Matchplay is complete with Leonard Gates and Kevin Painter remaining in the hunt firmly in York.
Painter ran riot in the first round thrashing late replacement Deta Hedman 8-1. He now moves into the Quarter-Finals and nearly sealed a clean sweep against 'The Heart of Darts'.
Hedman missed a chance to make it 5-1 and Painter held for 6-0 as the former struggled on the outer ring throughout. She finally did get off and running on her throw but this was a mere consolation as despite missing match darts, Painter came back to seal the deal.
While Gates keeps up his hunt for a third straight WSDT title. He saw off Colin McGarry in a thrilling encounter to end Saturday afternoon in a 9-7 win.
'Soulger' took control going into the first break leading 4-2 and despite being hit back, Gates made it 5-3.
But they soon came face to face again with parity at 5-5 before extra legs were forced as nothing could split them. Finally though Gates got over the line to knock out 'The Chief' in extra time.
