Hedman sets up Taylor clash, McGarry emphatic on debut with superb Deller win at World Seniors Darts Matchplay

`The opening ties of the World Seniors Darts Matchplay are completed with Deta Hedman set to face Phil Taylor at the end of the night after seeing off fellow legend, Trina Gulliver 8-5 for her first win in a WSDT major.

Hedman was superb in the opening two legs as she hit double four twice including to break. Gulliver hit the first 180 but still handed Hedman the chance to hold only for three darts at double 18 to go begging and ‘The Golden Girl’ cancelled out the break at 2-1.

Hedman replied with a 180 of her own but missed two darts to break back and allowed Gulliver back but despite hitting a perfect bull, she drifted into double seven on 82 and Hedman pinned double 12 to make it 3-1 and restore the break.

It was 4-1 as she consolidated on double nine. Gulliver missed 84 on double 16 but three darts to break again from Hedman allowed the former back to make it 4-2 at the interval.

On return, a 106 checkout en route saw Hedman head towards the finishing line at 7-4. Double 19 saw Gulliver hold at 7-5. Hedman skied a 93 checkout but returned for double 16 to make it 8-5 and seal the win after Gulliver missed bull for a 126.

While 'The Chief' led the way as Colin McGarry produced a statement win to see off Keith Deller emphatically 8-3 with three ton plus checkouts and an 89 average and he will face former World Matchplay champion Peter Evison tomorrow.

It was a superb opening leg from McGarry who was on a potential 13-darter before finally taking out double two to hold. A 180 from Deller saw him on course to hold but he missed two darts and McGarry replied with a roar and a 117 checkout to break and make it 2-0.

A 118 and another roar saw McGarry saw him hold to make it 3-0. But as McGarry started to fade away, Deller broke throw to make it 3-2 and was throwing for 3-3.

‘The Chief’ regained his form as he produced a compact 180 before missing 143 on double 16. But he returned for double eight to make it 4-2 and reopen his cushion.

McGarry hit double 20 to go 5-2 up with a hold. He left himself on 32 in case Deller could not pin double 20 but he could and it was 5-3. A superb 98 checkout saw McGarry make it 6-3 and he was two away from victory. He went one away with a 70 checkout and finished it off with a 121 checkout on the bull.
