Simon Whitlock’s debut at the World Seniors Darts Championship ended in disappointment as ‘The Wizard’ suffered a first-round exit at the hands of Paul Hogan. The Australian was defeated 3-1 in sets in his opening match at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet.
Whitlock initially found himself 2-0 down in the first set but managed to fight back and win it 3-2. He had another chance to take control in the second set after leading 2-1, but Hogan held his nerve and edged it 3-2.
With momentum on his side, Hogan took a crucial 2-1 lead in sets by clinching the third set, again by a 3-2 scoreline. Whitlock looked set to force a deciding set when he led 2-1 in the fourth, but Hogan produced back-to-back 13-dart legs to seal the victory in style.
John Part Rolls Back the Years
Three-time world champion John Part had a more successful outing, securing his place in the second round. The Canadian faced Jim McEwan and initially fell behind after losing the opening set. However, Part showed his experience by bouncing back to win the next two sets and take control of the match.
McEwan forced a deciding set by claiming the fourth, but in the final set, Part completely dominated, winning 3-0. He capped off his performance with a superb 12-dart leg to close out the match in style.
Other First-Round Results
Welshman Mike Huntley also booked his place in the second round after a tight 3-2 victory over Kevin Edwards. Meanwhile, crowd favorite Tony O’Shea battled past four-time women’s world champion Lisa Ashton in a scrappy contest, also winning 3-2 in sets.
The World Seniors Darts Championship continues with more legends of the game in action as they aim to roll back the years and compete for glory at the iconic Circus Tavern.
