Most players dream of hitting a nine darter. But Michael van Gerwen is no mere mortal. The Dutch darting phenomenon struck a perfect leg at Players Championship 3 on Saturday.

It came just six days after a nine-darter at Players Championship 2. Surprisingly, it still wasn’t enough to help him towards victory over Jonny Clayton. But PDC number one Van Gerwen did get the chance to celebrate a 20th professional nine-dart leg.

Mighty Mike achieved perfection for the first time in 2007. The rookie did it in style, sending a home crowd wild at the Masters of Darts in the Netherlands with a nine-darter against Raymond van Barneveld. At 17 years old, he became the youngest ever member of the nine dart club. That record still stands today.

At least one nine-darter every year

Incredibly, at least one nine-darter has been hit by Van Gerwen every year since 2012. The run was kicked off with three perfect legs in 12 months, culminating in famously going centimetres from the first back-to-back nine darters in history against James Wade at the PDC World Championship. He also struck at the World Matchplay and UK Open Qualifier 1.

One was thrown in 2013, with two more in 2014. He left it late in 2015, but managed the feat at Players Championship 18.

Van Gerwen went into overdrive in 2016, hitting a stunning four nine-darters. One was at the UK Open, with the other three in Players Championship floor events. A nine-dart leg at Players Championship 15 was remarkably repeated a day later at Players Championship 16.

Two were hit at UK Open Qualifier 4 in 2017, with a now rampant Van Gerwen adding another later in the year. 2018 saw the Green Machine finally end the European Tour’s nine-dart curse at the European Darts Matchplay. That was one of three perfect legs across the year.

It has taken Van Gerwen less than a month to reach the 20 mark. His two nine-darters are among an impressive six to have been hit on the PDC Pro Tour and the Challenge Tour so far this year. Four of them came at Players Championship 2.
