There will be more reasons to cheer when Michael van Gerwen hits a 180 in this year’s Premier League.
The world number one’s power scoring and record smashing makes him a massive crowd pleaser. Van Gerwen will be one of the ten stars competing in this season’s Premier League. A charitable gesture has given fans another reason to back the Dutchman.
Mighty Mike announced on Twitter that, for every 180 he throws in the Premier League, £100 will be donated to charity. The identity of the charity or charities that will benefit has not yet been disclosed. The two-time world champion will make the announcement on Wednesday.
Whoever is selected by van Gerwen is sure to receive a decent windfall. The 2017 Premier League champion smashed in 54 maximums in the 16 league games last year. Van Gerwen has never filled up the treble 20 bed fewer than 54 times in a Premier League group phase. He added 13 more in the play-offs, totalling 67. That would mean a sizeable £6700 donation.
He struck 62 180s in the group stage alone in 2016 – 71 in total. The Green Machine managed 73 in the 2015 event, and 67 in 2014. In his first event in 2014, he racked up 70 maximums.
Van Gerwen goes into the Premier League in good form as well. He defeated Raymond van Barneveld 11-8 to win the Masters title on Sunday. After winning a fourth straight Masters title, he is gunning for three Premier League wins in a row. He is three titles behind Phil Taylor’s tally of six.
